There was only one record shop where I grew up. A mecca where I killed countless Saturdays, searching the racks for something new. The more obscure, the bigger the secret, the better.
These were pre-internet days, when you had to do your homework. Cultures arrived by word of mouth and there was always something waiting for you. The list was endless - Warp, Creation, Rough Trade, Factory, 4AD, XL Domino.
Friendships were built around bands, first loves to mixtapes. Analog days that revolved around parcels in the post, covered in telltale handwriting. Cassettes and cuttings and cards, including my first ever listen of Sally Cinnamon and an in depth education in the Mary Chain.
Each of them was unexpected and heartfelt. Packed full of the new. I kept any I got in a box that travelled with me from house to house for years after. They were totems and the only things I’d have saved in a fire .
A couple of years ago I found a pile of zines left on the bar of a coffeeshop. Black and white, block type face each pulled together by hand. I was sold instantly, taken back to the old feeling of discovery.
