Field 01 REC

Each neighbourhood has one. And most kids have done some growing up on one of them. But oddly the town’s recs already seem a thing of the past. A public space where entry is free and is meant for every member the community. A thing like that couldn’t happen if it didn’t already exist today.

Field’s first issue is a collection of poems and photographs dedicated to the local Rec - a piece of nothing between two somethings.

Field 02 Ties

Nobody has ever measured, not even poets, how much the heart can hold.

Blackbird is the story of an unravelling relationship and the first shoots of hope blossoming beyond it.

“ Pain was shocking; unbearable to watch, especially in something so small. But death had a draw. It gave too. something that would have been impossible to catch now lay stilled in my hands for us to pour over.”

Field 03 barely alive clive

Ghosts come in many forms. Perhaps as an addiction or a mistake. Maybe in the enduring power of another or the loss of a loved one. But, however they show themselves, they can seem impossible to outrun, hanging on to haunt indefinitely.

Most of us choose to barter with them. To talk the ghost down until it settles. This, instead, is the story of a man who turned on the thing at his side. Who did so, no matter the cost. And who loved freely for a short time, by losing the shackles of long lost hope.

FIELD 04 An SgÙrr

Field 04 is the story of an enduring love. One that survives loss and remains true to promises made in a long life together. It is inspired by the Irish Sea, the smallest of islands and the perfect song at the perfect time.

‘It’s not the years. It’s the island. The hold it has. Even in death, it gets to have John.’

Field 07 Mahdi and HAYA

Issue 07 leads with a short collection of poems, Mahdi and Haya. Recently arrived to the UK after escaping the horrors of the Syrian War, these poems are a snapshot of the young couples life and the love that exists between them.

Field 05 The Pin Jar

Along with the seasons, issue 05 turns towards the darkness. Set in Firle on St Crispin’s Day and narrated by Betsy Shadlow, a figure from Sussex past, The Pin Jar is a tale of foolishness, revenge and long quietened evil

‘To the let the ol woman pass, you let the ol woman in’

Field 08 Persica

“I’m far from saying that I can, but I’m going to try anyway.” Vincent van Gogh

Persica is a short story about courage, doubt, cycles, sisters, a tree, a letter and a little grace from nothing. It is the 08th issue of Field and the last of our first year :)

FIELD 06 MILK BAR

Milk bar is a story about our relationship to the past. The lies we tell ourselves and the games we play to keep them as truths. Set at Christmas it follows the narrator on a journey home and into memory. An obscure and unfaithful place.

FIeld 09 The Southern Path

‘Us, kept safe inside the heart’s rough lines.’

The Southern Path is one last walk around the woods. A reconciliation with everything that’s gone and our final collapse back into everything. Another love story of sorts from field. With beautiful accompanying artwork by the very talented Mr Jospeh Bucklow. Find out more about Joe’s work at www.josephbucklow.com

FIELD 10 the FIRE TRACK

Escaped from the hull of a prison ship Marsden is washed up on the shores of Birling Gap where he is found close to death by Elvie and Cass. Betrayal, murder and revenge follow as Marsden’s past meets their present

‘When the past is recaptured by imagination breath is put back into life’

Field 11 Samael Kilick and the yew

The Halloween Issues are always field’s favourites and this years is no exception. Samael Kilick is a story of avarice, greed, hubris and the devil. Like last year, there are little extras inside. Fire Season is a short photo essay and written piece about the wildfires in Oregon, the BLM movement and the upcoming election by genius and Field family member Wolfgang.

field 12 singularity

Certain there is nothing to love for Hanley decides to trans load using new social media platform Singularity. The brainchild of the Zarathustra organisation, the tool allows users to live forever by uploading their consciousness to the internet. But Hanley’d belief in life proves too strong and love forces him to return

birthday issue

To celebrate two years of Field, this was an extra edition that combined two issues 03/09 for the first time. Two stories that were always meant to be one. The images in the issue were taken from the original issue and included a postcard of the original cover art by Joseph Bucklow.

FIELD 15 St Brigid & The Bear

Something’s not right with The Bear. In truth it hasn’t been for sometime and the usual remedies just won’t cut it. Field’s fifteenth issue is a short story about faith loss and a heart in the right place.

field 18 a thread left undone

A collection of stories and poems on control. Each asking how we learn to live with the thread left undone. Why choice can seem as hard as no choice at all. We asked eight writers for their response . Their voices turned to dementia, addiction, ageing, compulsion, exploitation desire and love.

Big love to Cat Spilman and her wonderful cover art

FIELD 13 TWOS

This issue featured two pieces of original short fiction. Shoplifting (from myself) and The Smell of Our Skins by Holly Dawson. Both stories depict lives lived at the edges of the country. At the on going abandonment and the blight of narrowing chances there. Shoplifting also featured the beautiful matchbox artwork of David Cass.

Field 16 Cascades

Three stories stemming from the ever present weirdness of environmental collapse and the collage art of Kellette Elliott.

FIELD 19 THE LAST OF THE LIGHT

Some beautiful work from some incredible voices writing on light. Featuring new writing from Nan Shepherd Prize winner Alycia Pirmohamed and Niamh Mulvey author of The Amendments. Plus rare early work from Cynan Jones and gorgeous cover art from the wonderful Sarah James

Field 14 The hand in Your own Undoing

Another from the growing Pin Jar folk tale collection. Narrated by the ghost of Rose Kylick, this long form poem takes place in the lean years between the world wars and tells the tale of traveller Wyn Caddell and the brutality of Boyd the Knackerman.

FIELD 17 FALLS

Short stories and poetry on the theme of Falling. Beautiful artwork too from the incredible Sarah Jarrett.
